When evaluating the affordability of college, consider your resources, including financial aid. If you or your family feel that you need financial aid but you're not sure you qualify, the best advice is to apply anyway. You may be eligible for merit-based financial aid regardless of your eligibility for traditional forms of need-based grants and loans. In 2006-2007, about $130 billion in financial aid was distributed, averaging $9,500 per full-time student (The College Board, Trends in Student Aid: 2007).
