Loan Cancellation/Forgiveness/Discharge

Under some of the federal loan programs, students may qualify for forgiveness of part or all of their student loan debt. An example of possible eligibility for cancellation includes teachers who work at low-income schools or in certain subject areas. Also students working in the U.S. Armed Forces or VISTA or the Peace Corps may also qualify for partial cancellation on their student loan debt.

Federal loan debt may be cancelled if documentation exists that the borrower is totally and permanently disabled or deceased. Also federal student loan debt can be discharged if your school closes before you complete your program of study or the school does not make the required return of loan funds to the lender. Students whose loans were falsely certify because of identify theft may be eligible for discharge.

To find out if you may qualify for a loan cancellation, consult with your financial aid officer or visit the U.S. Department of Education website.
