To get an insider's view, you need to ask the right questions. You want to learn as much as you can about the academic atmosphere, the college social life, and what it's like to be a student there. You can start with some of these questions and add more if you wish.

  • What is the typical class size for a freshman level course?
  • Does the school use teaching assistants to teach many undergraduate courses?
  • What is the typical class size for upper level courses?
  • Are faculty members easily accessible?
  • Are tutoring services available? Are they free?
  • Which academic majors are the strongest?
  • Do many residential students go home on weekends or do they stay on campus?
  • What type of relationship exists between the community and the college?
  • Is safety an issue on campus?
  • Which campus clubs are popular?
  • What is the academic atmosphere? Is it intense? Do I feel comfortable with it?
  • Where on the spectrum from liberal to conservative is this campus?
  • Are there enough majors that interest me?
